Mole Control in Sumter

Humane Mole Removal in Sumter, Clarendon, and Lee Counties

One of the biggest threats to a lawn or garden in South Carolina is moles.  Moles are burrowing carnivores that prefer to eat insects rather than garden plants. However, the underground tunnels they dig can ruin your garden and lawn, making your yard look unsightly. If moles are present on your property, our mole control experts at Sumter Pest Management can help.

More About Moles and Mole Behavior

Moles are notorious for their burrowing tendencies. They are between 6 to 8 inches long, have long pointed snouts, brown or gray dark fur, and oversized feet with large sharp claws to help them burrow and dig easily through soil.

Moles prefer to live and stay underground in darkness where they can freely forage for food. They are known for creating an extensive network of underground tunnels so they can travel quickly and efficiently. Rarely seen above ground, moles only occasionally stick their head out of a mound before going back under, which can make them hard to spot for homeowners. The biggest sign of their presence is raised mounds appearing in the yard practically overnight. Mole burrows do tremendous damage to plant life as root systems are damaged due to the burrowing.

As frustrating as the presence of a mole may be, you can solve the problem with professional help. Our mole specialists have 25 years of experience controlling mole intrusions and can do the same for you. Depending on your preference, we can utilize standard means of mole control or more humane methods that safely remove moles from your yard without killing them.

How We Inspect for Moles on Your Property

When tasked with inspection, our knowledgeable technicians will begin carefully examining your yard and garden for signs of mole damage.

The most obvious sign is molehills. These are cone-shaped mounds of soil ranging between 6 to 24 inches in diameter and 2 to 8 inches in height. The entrances they use are lightly covered with dirt. Other signs we look for are mole runways; these are ridges of pushed-up soil about 3 inches wide caused by a tunneling mole moving around underground. By using a special probe, we can poke around the yard near these mounds to locate the tunnel. If the probe gives no resistance in the soil, the active tunnel has been found.

How We Approach Mole Removal

There are several different ways Sumter Pest Management addresses a mole problem and we discuss these options with you following inspection. It’s important to note that using a combination of treatment methods works best if you wish to get rid of a mole quickly. As mentioned, we have humane means of removing moles if you do not wish to harm them.

Mole Repellents will repulse the mole and make them no longer want to feed in your yard. We use non-toxic granule repellents or ultrasonic repellents to drive away moles. Moles are almost blind, so they rely heavily on their sensitive ears and touch to find their way around. The noises of an ultrasonic repellent can make it uncomfortable for the moles to stay, as it creates a piercing noise that penetrates the soil and irritates moles, causing them to seek a quieter and more peaceful environment.

Mole Trapping is another effective way to eliminate a mole from a property. Setting a mole trap using worms (or a worm-shaped rodenticide) as bait can lure a mole to the trap for easy capture. We can use humane or non-humane traps depending on what you prefer.

Mole baits are designed to mimic the mole’s natural food source, the grub or earthworm, in both shape and feel. These can control moles in a single feeding as moles usually die in their tunnels within 1 to 2 days of ingesting the bait.

The BurrowRX system is a newer and more humane method of mole treatment, which we also offer. This device pumps carbon monoxide into the open burrow and has a smoke indicator that will alert you to where the gas is traveling. Underground moles will breathe in the gas and die within minutes of application. This method eliminates the need for traps and is a safer alternative over poisons and other toxic materials.

After successfully controlling the intruding moles, we can keep them from returning with follow-up appointments where we inspect your yard, apply repellents, and advise you on ways you can make your yard more unappealing to moles to prevent their reemergence.
