Mosquito Characteristics

The word mosquito originates from Spanish with the name meaning “little fly.” Mosquitoes have long, thin legs and a head featuring a long and well-pronounced proboscis which is used to suck victims’ blood. Mosquito bodies and wings most often are covered in tiny scales.

There are at least 3,500 species of mosquito that have been discovered in all parts of the world, and about 170 of them are found in the United States. Despite a large number of different species, all mosquitoes undergo four life stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult.

Female mosquitoes consume blood in order to lay eggs while male mosquitoes prefer to get their nutrition from the nectar of flowers and other sources. When a mosquito bites, the transmission of their saliva causes irritation and, in the worst case, transmits disease.

What Attracts Mosquitoes?

Mosquitoes require food, water, and shelter to survive. If your yard has all of these necessities, your home is a desired spot for a mosquito breeding ground. When you call us to schedule an inspection, we will identify areas that attract mosquitoes and recommend actions to take to make your yard less appealing to them.

Reasons mosquitoes may target your property include:

  • Standing water
Even more so than our blood, mosquitoes need water to survive and thrive, although they do not need much of it to breed. Stagnant water, especially after rainfall, offer mosquitoes plenty of opportunities to lay eggs. Potted plants, kids’ toys and pools, dog bowls, birdbaths, and other items where water can collect are prime areas mosquitoes will seek out. Our recommendation after an inspection is to immediately drain or empty out items that retain extra water.
  • Poor drainage
Lawns that tend to develop puddles after rainfall or after using your sprinkler can be another ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes. Addressing these drainage issues by resoiling, reseeding, or getting a landscaping professional to limit standing water is essential to discouraging mosquitoes from breeding.
  • Overgrown vegetation
Grass and shrubs that have grown too tall are a perfect shelter for mosquitoes to hide and breed. These areas also tend to retain moisture for longer periods, even during a hot day. By mowing your lawn regularly and trimming shrubs, you can deter mosquitoes from selecting these areas.

Our experts can perform a comprehensive free inspection of your home and yard to uncover potential breeding grounds. Call Sumter Pest Management today at (803) 615-2308 to schedule yours!

Reliable Mosquito Removal in Sumter

Mosquitoes are a frustrating pest to get rid of, but with the help of well-trained professionals, we can reduce the infestation and protect you and your family from the health risks it brings. Our experts use a mosquito removal method that has proven to be effective, and we are confident that it will control mosquitoes in your yard as well.

Some of the strategies we employ to address mosquitoes include:

  • Mosquito treatment application. Sumter Pest Management uses industry-leading insecticides and equipment to treat mosquito breeding areas. Whether it is a perimeter application around your home, a broadcast treatment on your lawn and shrubs, or a mosquito fogger application, we know how and where to apply mosquito control products to effectively address the population while prioritizing you and your family’s safety.
  • Routine treatments. While adult mosquitoes are the ones most of our customers worry about, they are only a small segment of the population. Even after treating the adults, there are eggs and an upcoming generation of mosquitoes waiting to hatch and feed. Our experts recommend a treatment program for follow-up applications to achieve the best mosquito control. This also allows you to enjoy your yard for longer without worrying about potential bites.
  • Prevention advice. While chemical treatment is essential to ensuring the mosquito population is kept down, preventative measures should be taken to make sure it stays down. Our experts will happily provide our clients with helpful tips and advice to lessen the likelihood of a re-infestation in the future.

Sumter Pest Management has the skills to get rid of mosquitoes and take back your yard. Please schedule your free inspection with our experts today or call (803) 615-2308!
